Welcome to the digital portfolio of Penny Hilton representing her varied career which spans film, tv production, and graphic design.

Having studied graphic design at St Martins and for several years specialised in writing Penny started her career as an advertising copywriter. where she spent most of her time writing commercials and radio ads. Most of the age group she wrote for was 16-25 year old males. She left advertising to become a director and after experience with several production companies and many of the major broadcasters she set up independently and gravitated towards issues around equality and diversity developing a particular interest in mental health.  As a documentary filmmaker she has concentrated on tackling sensitive issues with clarity and creativity. Using both film, animation and always leaning heavily on graphic design, the chief purpose of all her work has been to give rise to conversation and debate.

Depending on the specifics of the job she worked as a producer, director, writer, designer and editor sometimes taking on all roles other times leading a production team, but always  carefully selecting only subjects that interest her. Throughout her time as a director she has held various posts as a senior lecturer at leading academic institutions and is an active researcher. Her specialism is in all modes of digital experience that involve graphic design and moving image. Her specific interest in mental health asks how the power of film can help promote recovery and well being.
